In short: What happens when a dedicated fan of the Halo universe decides to turn its lore into a heavy metal odyssey? Shadow of Intent began as a studio project where every note was designed to mirror the narrative of a sci-fi epic, blending technical death metal with cinematic scale.

Shadow of Intent originated in 2013 as a studio project by Ben Duerr and Chris Wiseman in Connecticut. Deeply connected to the Halo universe, the group's title originates from a vessel within the video games, while Duerr confirmed that the narrative of the novels guides their compositions. In their early years, the project functioned as a collaborative split where Duerr handled lead vocals while Wiseman composed all remaining music. The group's name was specifically inspired by a ship in the game series. They remain independent artists who have not signed with a label. Aside from one distribution deal, they have released all their work on their own.

The band's evolution is marked by a transition from digital to organic performance. Their first two releases, Inferi Sententia (2014) and Primordial (2016), featured programmed drum tracks and homemade recordings. It wasn't until the 2017 release of Reclaimer that the group featured a unique live player on every instrument. The 2017 release of The Instrumentals provided non-vocal versions of their previous two albums. This transition allowed them to move toward major touring opportunities in 2018.

This period also saw the band expand from a duo into a five-piece ensemble, eventually establishing a lineup that allowed for more complex live touring. While the band initially focused strictly on Halo themes, they experimented with broader concepts, such as the 2019 album Melancholy, which depicted a demonic goddess orchestrating mass suicides. However, the group eventually circled back to their roots, releasing the single 'The Migrant' in 2023 to signal a return to Halo-themed content. Their sound is a dense tapestry of deathcore, symphonic metal, and technical death metal, often drawing comparisons to acts like Fleshgod Apocalypse and Dimmu Borgir. The 2022 deluxe edition of Elegy included a cover of a Lamb of God song. In 2025, the band released their fifth studio album, Imperium Delirium. During a 2025 tour, a guest vocalist filled in for Duerr while he awaited a child's birth.
