In a Victorian-inspired mansion, living dolls endlessly clean the soot emitted by their masters.
In short: Shadows House follows Emilico, a cheerful Living Doll serving her mistress, Kate. Within their mysterious mansion, these partners navigate a sinister environment while uncovering dark secrets. This Japanese manga series, created by the duo Somato, blends a wholesome aesthetic with an atmosphere of claustrophobia and menace that critics frequently praise.
The series, written and designed by Nori and illustrated by Hisshi under the collective name Somato, began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump on September 6, 2018. The narrative centers on the denizens of the Shadow House and their assigned Living Doll partners. As the story progresses, the central characters, Kate and Emilico, move beyond their initial roles to discover the unsettling truths hidden within their home. The manga has gained significant traction, with over 3 million copies in circulation as of July 2024.
The aesthetic of the series is a key element of its reception. Reviewers have noted its Victorian-inspired setting, which juxtaposes a wholesome, historical visual style with a sinister premise. Critics like Rebecca Silverman have compared the series to classic literature, noting that the character design of Emilico evokes the illustrations of Alice in Wonderland by John Tenniel. Others, such as Allen Moody, have drawn parallels to The Promised Neverland, highlighting the pervasive sense of menace that defines the mansion's atmosphere.
Beyond the printed page, the franchise expanded into a two-season anime adaptation produced by CloverWorks. The first season, directed by Kazuki Ōhashi, aired in 2021, followed by a second season in 2022. The production features music by Kenichiro Suehiro and themes performed by artists like Reona and ClariS. As the manga entered its final story arc in July 2024, the creators adjusted their serialization schedule due to the writer's ongoing health challenges, with at least one more year of content estimated to conclude the saga.
