In short: Before becoming one of India's highest-paid actors, Shahid Kapoor was a background dancer who felt like a star for the first time on a stage. His journey from commercial failures to critically acclaimed performances is a masterclass in artistic persistence and physical transformation.

Born in New Delhi in 1981, Shahid Kapoor's path to stardom was non-linear. The son of actors Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem, he began his career as a background dancer in the 1990s for films like Dil To Pagal Hai. It wasn't until age 15, while training at Shiamak Davar's academy, that he performed songs like "Vogue" and "GoldenEye." He described this specific stage performance as the first moment he truly felt like a star. His mother was a dancer who later became an actress in Mumbai. He also has a maternal half-brother named Ishaan Khatter. His father moved to the city of Mumbai while Kapoor stayed in Delhi with his grandparents.

Kapoor's early film career was marked by significant volatility. After debuting in 2003 with Ishq Vishk—a role where he intentionally chose an unlikable lead to break traditional tropes—he faced a string of commercial failures between 2004 and 2005. Even his first major success, the 2006 drama Vivah, received mixed reviews; while it was a box-office hit on a shoestring budget of ₹100 million, critics noted he lacked screen presence. One early project he turned down was a sex comedy titled Style. Before his debut, he attended workshops led by Naseeruddin Shah. He also appeared in several music videos and television commercials for brands like Kit Kat.

His career trajectory shifted toward critical acclaim with Imtiaz Ali's Jab We Met (2007), where he played a complex businessman. This period marked a move toward demanding roles, such as portraying twin brothers in Kaminey (2009). To prepare for the latter, Kapoor engaged speech specialists to research lisps and stutters and underwent rigorous functional training to achieve a radically different physique. These efforts eventually led to major accolades, including Filmfare Awards for his performances in Haider (2014) and Udta Punjab (2016). He won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for his role in Udta Punjab. His highest-grossing projects include Padmaavat and Kabir Singh. Most recently, he starred in a crime drama series called Farzi.
