How a human rights activist became a powerful political figure
In short: From leading the advocacy group Liberty to becoming a life peer in the House of Lords, Shami Chakrabarti’s journey from barrister to Shadow Attorney General is a study in the intersection of law, activism, and high-stakes politics.
Shami Chakrabarti’s career is defined by her leadership of Liberty, a major civil liberties group, which she directed from 2003 to 2016. During this period, she became a prominent voice against what she termed "excessive" anti-terror legislation following the September 11 attacks, specifically targeting measures like the Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001. Her influence was so significant that The Times described her as perhaps the most effective public affairs lobbyist of the previous two decades.
Her transition into formal politics brought both prestige and intense scrutiny. In August 2016, she was elevated to the peerage as Baroness Chakrabarti as part of the Prime Minister's Resignation Honours. Her appointment as Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales followed soon after. This move was not without controversy; some Labour MPs, including Tom Watson and Wes Streeting, questioned whether her appointment to the Lords could create potential bias in her role as chair of an inquiry into racism within the Labour Party.
Beyond the political arena, Chakrabarti has navigated complex institutional challenges. While serving on the governing board of the London School of Economics, she faced criticism regarding a £1.5 million donation from the foundation of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi. While she maintained that any assessment of the donation was made in good faith, the incident led to the resignation of LSE Director Howard Davies. Despite these complexities, her legal expertise has been recognized through appointments to the Leveson Inquiry and her induction into the Privy Council.
