Shanghai's original gateway evolved from a 1920s airfield into a modern transit powerhouse.
In short: Located just 13 kilometers from downtown, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport serves as a vital hub for China Eastern Airlines and other major carriers. Once the city's primary international gateway, it now balances high-volume domestic traffic with select regional routes, seamlessly integrating with high-speed rail and the city's extensive metro network.
Construction of Hongqiao Airport began in 1921, with the facility opening for mixed civilian use by May 1923. Its history is deeply intertwined with the region's turbulent 20th century, serving as a military base during the Second Sino-Japanese War and witnessing the 1937 Oyama Incident. Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the site underwent significant reconstruction, reopening for civilian operations in April 1964. During this era, it became a rare point of entry for international visitors, famously hosting U.S. President Richard Nixon in 1972.
The airport's role shifted dramatically with the 1999 opening of Pudong International Airport, which assumed the majority of international traffic. To maintain its relevance, Hongqiao underwent a massive 15.3-billion-yuan expansion completed in 2010. This project introduced a second runway and the sprawling Terminal 2, which is four times the size of the original Terminal 1. Today, the airport functions as a critical domestic hub, though it maintains key regional connections to cities like Tokyo, Seoul, and Taipei.
Beyond its aviation capacity, Hongqiao is notable for its proximity to the Shanghai Hongqiao railway station, creating a multimodal transit hub served by multiple high-speed rail lines and metro routes. While a proposed maglev extension to connect the two airports was indefinitely postponed due to public opposition, the recent completion of the Airport Link Line has improved connectivity. In 2025, the airport handled over 50 million passengers, earning a 5-Star Skytrax rating for its modern facilities and service standards.
