In short: Nestled in the heart of Taipei, Songshan Airport is a rare urban relic that functions as both a civilian hub and a military base. While most major cities moved their primary airports to the outskirts decades ago, Songshan remains, sparking intense debates over urban planning, safety, and business convenience.

Originally established in 1936 as the Japanese military's Matsuyama Airfield, the site has evolved through decades of conflict and transformation. Following World War II, it was renamed Songshan Airport and became the primary gateway to Taipei. By 1979, however, the facility reached its capacity, leading to the inauguration of the larger Taoyuan International Airport. This shift caused an immediate 53% drop in passenger volume, as international traffic was relocated to accommodate larger aircraft and growing demand.

The airport's location in the central business district remains its most contentious feature. Proponents argue that its proximity saves travelers roughly 30 minutes compared to Taoyuan, making it an ideal link for business routes to cities like Tokyo, Seoul, and Shanghai. Conversely, critics point to significant drawbacks, including noise pollution, traffic congestion, and strict building height restrictions necessitated by flight safety requirements. These limitations have even influenced the construction of local landmarks like Taipei 101, which required adjustments to flight procedures to avoid potential collisions.

Despite repeated proposals to close the facility and repurpose its 182 hectares for parks and infrastructure, the airport has persisted. It has undergone extensive renovations to modernize its terminals and accommodate contemporary jets, maintaining its role as a vital domestic and regional hub. Today, it serves millions of passengers annually, including the busy route to Kinmen, while continuing to host Republic of China Air Force units tasked with serving Taiwan's president and vice president. Its survival highlights the ongoing tension between the convenience of a downtown terminal and the logistical challenges of operating an airport in a dense metropolis.
