In short: Founded in 1607 as a royal hunting retreat, Sheikhupura evolved from a citadel named after a prince's nickname into a bustling Pakistani industrial center. Beyond its rapid population growth and modern business parks, the city holds a complex history of Mughal architecture, Sikh heritage, and the turbulent events of 1947.

The city of Sheikhupura, located 38 km northwest of Lahore, was established by the Mughal emperor Jahangir in 1607. Originally named Jehangir pura, the city eventually adopted the name Sheikhupura, derived from 'Shekhu'—a childhood nickname given to Jahangir by his mother. Before the Mughal era, the region was known as Virkgarh, dominated by the Virk Jats. The city’s landscape is defined by its historical significance as a royal hunting ground, most notably marked by the Hiran Minar, a monument Jahangir built between 1607 and 1620 to honor his pet deer, Mansiraj.

The city's history is deeply intertwined with the shifting political tides of the region. Under Sikh rule, it was briefly renamed Singhpuria. By the eve of the 1947 Partition, the district held a significant Sikh population of 19%. Despite the area's Muslim majority, many Sikhs remained in the city, hoping it would be awarded to India due to its proximity to Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak. This hope turned tragic; between 16 August and 31 August 1947, communal violence erupted, resulting in an estimated 10,000 deaths and leaving thousands of refugees trapped in the Sacha Sauda camp.

Today, Sheikhupura is a rapidly expanding industrial and educational hub. Its population has surged, growing by 68.82% between the 1998 and 2017 censuses. The city is currently developing major infrastructure projects like the Quaid-e-Azam Business Park and the Rachna Industrial Park. With a literacy rate of 43.6% and a demographic where 88% of residents speak Punjabi, the city continues to evolve from its imperial roots into a modern center for commerce and industry in the Punjab province.
