How a basketball connection birthed a neo-soul powerhouse
In short: Before she was a Grammy-nominated solo star, Marsha Ambrosius was a student of business and finance. Her path to musical stardom didn't start in a studio, but through a shared love of basketball with a poet, leading to the creation of the influential duo Floetry.
The origins of the neo-soul duo Floetry lie in an unexpected bond between Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart. The two met through their mutual passion for basketball while attending the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology. While Ambrosius focused her studies on Business and Finance, Stewart pursued Performing Arts, Media, and Art. This connection eventually evolved into a professional partnership when Ambrosius, in 1999, submitted a song titled "Fantasize" to her publishers, inviting Stewart to contribute poetry to the track.
The duo's career took them from the UK to the United States, where they performed on the poetry circuit in cities like Atlanta and Philadelphia. Their first album, *Floetic*, arrived in 2002 following a deal with DreamWorks Records. Ambrosius's versatility as a songwriter and vocalist soon extended beyond the group. She contributed to Michael Jackson's 2001 album *Invincible* with the song "Butterflies," earning both a writing and backing vocal credit.
Following the disbandment of Floetry, Ambrosius transitioned into a highly successful solo career. Her 2011 debut, *Late Nights & Early Mornings*, was a significant commercial achievement, debuting at number two on the US Billboard 200 and topping the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. This milestone was notable as it marked a rare moment where British acts reached the top of the US charts. Her career has since been defined by high-profile collaborations with artists ranging from Kanye West and Dr. Dre to Alicia Keys and Solange.
