In short: Founded in 1980 with $50,000 in loans, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company transformed from a small Chico warehouse operation into a pillar of the American craft beer movement. By mastering the balance of hops and malt, they proved that independent brewers could thrive through technical precision and a commitment to sustainability.

The company began when Ken Grossman and Paul Camusi turned their homebrewing hobby into a commercial venture in Chico, California. Lacking standard industrial machinery, they scavenged metal from scrapyards and repurposed old dairy equipment to build their first brewhouse. This humble start in 1980 was guided by early advice from industry pioneers at Anchor Brewing and New Albion Brewing. While many microbreweries of that era failed due to the financial and mechanical complexities of scaling up, Sierra Nevada endured by focusing on product quality and character.

The brewery’s flagship Pale Ale, first produced in November 1980, became a defining influence on the American palate, noted for its grapefruit aroma and balanced malt profile. By 1987, the company had expanded distribution to seven states, necessitating a move to a larger facility. Over the decades, the brewery grew into one of the largest independent producers in the country. In 2014, they opened a second, LEED-Platinum-certified facility in Mills River, North Carolina, which remains the only brewery in the United States to hold that specific environmental certification.

Beyond brewing, the company is recognized for its aggressive sustainability initiatives. Their Chico site utilizes 10,000 photovoltaic modules to generate 2.6 megawatts of solar power and employs a closed-loop system where spent grain feeds local cattle and wastewater is repurposed for irrigation. They also maintain a private mile of railway to reduce their carbon footprint. This commitment to environmental stewardship earned them the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Green Business of the Year award in 2010, cementing their reputation as both a commercial success and a model for responsible industrial practices.
