How a Greek shipping family built a premium cruise line to win Bermuda contracts
In short: Founded in 1988 by the Chandris Group, Celebrity Cruises was a strategic maneuver to secure exclusive access to Bermuda. By rejecting the glitz of mass-market competitors in favor of refined design and high-end dining, the line carved out a premium niche that eventually caught the eye of Royal Caribbean.
Celebrity Cruises emerged from a specific regulatory challenge. In 1988, the Government of Bermuda held five highly coveted cruise contracts, which granted priority berthing and unlimited island access. When Holland America Line acquired Home Lines and subsequently withdrew those ships from the Bermuda route, an opening appeared. The Chandris Group, which already operated the mass-market Chandris Fantasy Cruises, sought these contracts but was rebuffed because the government required an upmarket operator. To qualify, Chandris launched Celebrity Cruises in April 1988, successfully securing a five-year contract for two ships starting in 1990.
The brand identity was built on a deliberate departure from the era's typical cruise aesthetic. Chairman John Chandris famously prioritized comfort and quality over glitz. This strategy included a pioneering partnership with chef Michel Roux and a focus on sophisticated interiors. The company’s logo, a stylized Greek letter Chi, honored its Chandris roots. This upscale positioning proved successful, leading to a series of purpose-built vessels like the Horizon and the Century class. In 1997, the Chandris family sold its interests to Royal Caribbean, which established a holding company to manage the brand as a distinct, premium alternative to its mainstream offerings.
The line has since evolved through several distinct eras of ship design and fleet expansion. The Millennium-class ships, introduced between 2000 and 2002, were the first to utilize gas turbine propulsion. Later, the Solstice class and the modern Edge class continued this trajectory of design-led innovation. The company has also expanded into specialized markets, such as the Galápagos Islands through its Celebrity Expeditions sub-brand. Looking ahead, the company is diversifying further, with plans for a new class of vessels dubbed Project Nirvana and an entry into the river cruising market with ships like the Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker, expected to debut in 2027.
