In short: Silverstone began as a deserted WWII bomber station where friends held impromptu races. One driver famously hit a sheep, earning the event the nickname Mutton Grand Prix. Today, it is a world-class Formula One venue, having evolved from a perimeter track into a technical masterpiece of modern motorsport engineering.

The Silverstone Circuit stands on the site of RAF Silverstone, a bomber station that operated from 1943 to 1946. After the war, the Royal Automobile Club sought a permanent mainland venue for a Grand Prix. With austerity measures preventing new construction, they leased the airfield in 1948. James Brown was hired to design the circuit in under two months, utilizing the existing runways and perimeter roads. The first British Grand Prix held there in 1948 drew an estimated 100,000 spectators.

The track has undergone constant evolution to balance speed with safety. Initially, races were held on the runways themselves, marked by hay bales. By 1949, the perimeter track became the standard. Following the tragic 1994 Imola Grand Prix, major redesigns were implemented to reduce speeds, including the transformation of the flat-out Abbey kink into a chicane. Today, the circuit features high-speed sequences like Maggotts and Becketts, where drivers endure lateral forces exceeding 5g, and the 770-meter Hangar Straight, where speeds reach 202 mph.

Silverstone’s history is deeply intertwined with the sport's development. It hosted the first race of the inaugural 1950 World Championship of Drivers, an event attended by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Over the decades, it has witnessed the rise of legendary drivers and teams, from the dominance of Alfa Romeo in the early 1950s to the technical prowess of modern F1. The British Racing Drivers' Club took over the lease in 1952, cementing the circuit's status as the permanent home of the British Grand Prix since 1987.
