From construction site apprentice to the creator of the world's most avant-garde metal couture
In short: Shaun Leane began his career as a teenage construction worker before becoming a classically trained goldsmith. His boundary-pushing collaborations with Alexander McQueen transformed jewellery into sculptural art, earning him a place in the permanent collections of the world's most prestigious museums while redefining the limits of metalwork and design.
Born in London in 1969, Shaun Leane left school at 14 to work in his father's construction firm. A chance encounter with a career advisor led him to a youth training scheme in jewellery design at Kingsway Princeton College. He subsequently completed a seven-year apprenticeship at English Traditional Jewellery in Hatton Garden, where he mastered classical goldsmithing techniques, including complex settings and antique restoration. By 18, he was already crafting diamond tiaras for elite houses like Garrard and Asprey.
Leane's career shifted dramatically in 1992 when he met Alexander McQueen. Their partnership produced iconic, avant-garde pieces that challenged traditional notions of jewellery. His most ambitious project, the Coiled Corset for the 1999 show The Overlook, required 16 hours of work daily for 10 weeks. Other notable collaborations included the 1996 mouthpiece Repression and pheasant claw earrings. These works, blending traditional craft with radical concepts, eventually led to his pieces being acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Beyond his work with McQueen, Leane established his eponymous brand in 1999, combining modern design with traditional craftsmanship. His portfolio includes architectural commissions like the Arbour balcony railings in Kensington and intricate pieces such as The Diamond Glove, which took five years to complete. Despite his success and numerous industry awards, the brand entered administration in May 2024. Today, Leane remains a prominent figure, serving as a judge on the BBC series All That Glitters and maintaining his status as a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.
