In short: Six is a modern musical that reimagines the six wives of Henry VIII as a competitive pop girl group. Instead of being defined by their shared husband, these queens battle to determine who suffered the most, eventually choosing to rewrite their own stories and reclaim their individual identities on stage.

Conceived by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss while they were students at Cambridge University, Six began as a project for the 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The creators were less interested in a strict historical retelling and more focused on reforming how women are represented in musical theatre. They drew inspiration from pop stars like Beyoncé, Adele, and Britney Spears to craft the distinct personalities and musical styles of each queen. The show’s foundation was written in approximately 10 nonconsecutive days, blending biographical storytelling with the high-energy format of a concert.

The narrative structure centers on a singing competition where the wives argue over who had the most difficult experience with Henry VIII. Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and Catherine Parr each perform songs detailing their lives. However, the competition ultimately serves as a vehicle for the characters to reject their connection to Henry. By the finale, they abandon the contest to sing together as a group, imagining a reality where they were never married to him and could define their own 'happily ever afters'.

Since its 2017 debut, Six has grown into a global phenomenon with productions on Broadway, the West End, and international tours spanning countries including Japan, China, and the Philippines. The show has faced various challenges, including significant pauses during the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced closures and rescheduling across its global residencies. Despite its success, the production has also navigated controversy, such as the backlash surrounding the casting of influencer Dylan Mulvaney in 2026. Today, the musical remains a staple of modern theatre, celebrated for its pop-infused score and its mission to validate the queens as individuals rather than mere footnotes in a king's history.
