In short: Occupying the southern tip of Sweden, Skåne is a landscape apart. While the rest of the country is defined by rocky terrain and forests, this county features fertile plains that share more in common with Denmark than the Swedish north. It is a region of deep history and modern connectivity.

Skåne County was officially established in 1997 through the merger of the former Malmöhus and Kristianstad counties. While it is the southernmost administrative region of Sweden, its character is shaped by a unique geography. Unlike the stony, undulating uplands of Småland or the vast, mountainous forests of Norrland, Skåne is characterized by rich, flat plains. This terrain makes it the oldest settled and most densely populated agricultural area in the country, creating a physiographic and economic profile that feels distinctly continental.

The region serves as a vital gateway between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. This connectivity was dramatically enhanced in 2000 with the opening of the Öresund Bridge, which physically linked the Swedish and Danish railway systems and connected Swedish motorways to European route E20. Before this, transit relied on train ferries, such as those operating between Helsingborg and Helsingør. Today, the county remains a hub of movement, hosting major ports like Trelleborg and Ystad, alongside three significant public airports.

Administratively, the region is complex, balancing national interests with local governance. It is managed by both the County Administrative Board, which represents the royal government, and Region Skåne, an elected assembly responsible for public healthcare and transport. With 33 municipalities, the area is home to 1.3 million people, representing 13% of Sweden’s total population despite covering only about 3% of its land area. From the historic city of Malmö to the academic center of Lund, Skåne remains a pivotal, densely populated engine of Swedish life.
