A South African town defined by its colonial history and dramatic mountain amphitheatre
In short: Nestled beneath the Helderberg Mountain, Somerset West has evolved from a 17th-century cattle post into a major retail and wine hub. Named after a British governor, this Western Cape town sits at the intersection of colonial architecture, modern gated estates, and a landscape shaped by the Hottentots-Holland range.
The origins of Somerset West trace back to 1672, when Dutch soldiers established a cattle post in the area. The town eventually developed around the Lourens River and the historic Vergelegen farm. This estate was built in the 18th century by Willem Adriaan van der Stel, the son of the governor who gave his name to nearby Stellenbosch. Van der Stel’s tenure ended in disgrace when he was recalled to Holland following accusations of corruption and mistreatment of local farmers. Today, the restored Vergelegen estate is owned by a subsidiary of the mining giant Anglo American and remains a prominent landmark.
Formally founded in 1822, the town was named after Lord Charles Somerset, a British governor of the Cape Colony. The suffix 'West' was appended after 1825 to distinguish it from Somerset East. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the town expanded significantly. In the 1830s, the construction of Sir Lowry's Pass linked the settlement to eastern outposts over the Hottentots-Holland mountains. By the 1960s, the area gained industrial significance when a local factory became the second-largest dynamite producer in the world.
Modern Somerset West is characterized by rapid growth and a changing landscape. A recent population boom has seen the rise of numerous gated estates on previously undeveloped land, effectively bridging the gap between the town and the broader Cape Town metropolitan area. Despite this modernization, the town retains its connection to the land through the Helderberg Wine Region, which includes notable estates like Lourensford and the historic Vergelegen. Surrounded by mountains in an amphitheatre shape, the town serves as a central retail hub for the surrounding Helderberg, Stellenbosch, and Overberg regions.
