In short: Spanning four provinces, the South China Karst is a vast, UNESCO-protected expanse renowned for its unparalleled geological diversity. From towering stone forests to massive sinkholes, this region serves as the global type-site for humid tropical and subtropical karst development, showcasing a dramatic transition from high plateaus to lowland basins.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2007, the South China Karst is a serial property that encompasses seven distinct clusters across Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan. The site is divided into two phases of inscription: the first, added in 2007, includes the Libo, Shilin, and Wulong Karst areas, while the second, added in 2014, incorporates the Guilin, Shibing, Jinfoshan, and Huanjiang Karst clusters. Together, these areas cover a total of 97,125 hectares, supported by a buffer zone of 176,228 hectares.

The region is geologically significant for its dramatic elevation change, descending approximately 2,000 meters over a 700-kilometer span. This transition moves from the western Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, which averages 2,100 meters in elevation, down to the eastern Guangxi Basin, which averages just 110 meters. This unique topography creates a geomorphic gradient that makes the area the world’s definitive type-site for studying karst landform development in humid tropical and subtropical climates.

The landscape is defined by a variety of iconic features, including tower karst (fenglin), cone karst (fengcong), and pinnacle karst (shilin). Beyond these surface formations, the site protects giant dolines known as Tiankeng karst, as well as extensive cave systems filled with rich speleothem deposits. Because the region retains much of its natural vegetation, it offers seasonal aesthetic variations that complement its scientific value. UNESCO considers the site unrivalled in its diversity, representing the most spectacular and representative series of karst landscapes found anywhere on Earth.
