In short: Occupying the southern half of the Sinai Peninsula, South Sinai is Egypt's least populated governorate. While it is celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty and the historic Saint Catherine's Monastery, the region has a complex history shaped by both ancient religious traditions and a series of significant security incidents.

The South Sinai Governorate serves as a unique intersection of history and geography. Located in the eastern reaches of Egypt, it is home to Saint Catherine's Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site established between 548 and 565. This site remains one of the world's oldest working Christian monasteries and houses the oldest continually operating library, which once held the famous Codex Sinaiticus until 1859. Beyond its religious significance, the region is characterized by the rugged Mount Sinai area, where the Bedouin population resides, and the coastal city of El Tor, site of the historic Raithu Monastery.

Despite its cultural allure, the region has faced significant volatility. Throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, South Sinai was the target of multiple terrorist attacks. Notable incidents include the 1985 Ras Burqa resort massacre, the 2004 bombings in Nuweiba, the 2005 Sharm El Sheikh attack—which resulted in 88 deaths—and the 2006 Dahab bombings. Furthermore, the Sinai insurgency that primarily affected the neighboring North Sinai Governorate occasionally reached the south, such as the 2014 attack on a tourist bus in Taba. These events have deeply marked the region's recent history.

The demographic and security landscape has shifted significantly in recent years. As of January 2023, the governorate's population was estimated at 117,113. By 2024, the urbanization rate reached 51.1%, with 59,845 residents living in urban centers compared to 57,268 in rural areas. Following firm interventions by the Egyptian government and military after 2014, officials report that the region is now secure. However, the area's challenging terrain, particularly its remote mountain orchards, has historically provided cover for illicit activities like narcotics smuggling, highlighting the ongoing tension between the region's natural isolation and its integration into the modern Egyptian state.
