South Khorasan is Iran's most sparsely populated province, yet it holds ancient, deep roots.
In short: Spanning over 150,000 square kilometers, South Khorasan is the third-largest province in Iran, yet it remains the country's most sparsely populated territory. This arid, mountainous landscape, once known as the historic region of Quhistan, has served as a crossroads for empires, refugees, and diverse cultural movements for centuries.
South Khorasan represents a modern administrative restructuring of a much older, distinct cultural entity known as Quhistan. While the province was officially established in 2004 following the division of the massive Greater Khorasan province, its geography—characterized by hot, dry plains and elevated mountain ranges—has long defined the lives of its inhabitants. The region lacks permanent rivers, forcing a reliance on seasonal water sources that shape the harsh, desert-like climate of the southern and southwestern plains.
Historically, this territory was a vital, if often turbulent, segment of Greater Khorasan. It witnessed the rise and fall of numerous dynasties, from the Parthians and Sassanids to the Abbasids, Ghaznavids, and the Mongol Ilkhanate. Its strategic location made it a refuge for groups like the Ismaili movement and a destination for those fleeing political instability in the Abbasid caliphate. Over time, the region absorbed influences from Arab, Turkic, Kurdish, and Turkmen tribes, creating a unique cultural tapestry that persists today.
Modern South Khorasan is a product of 21st-century administrative planning. After its creation in 2004, the province expanded significantly by incorporating cities like Qaen, Ferdows, and Tabas, which were historically part of the Quhistan region. By the 2016 census, the province comprised 11 counties with a total population of 768,898. Despite its vast size, the population density remains remarkably low at about 5 inhabitants per square kilometer, highlighting the isolation and resilience of the communities that call this desert landscape home.
