In short: Once a massive mosaic of over 45 indigenous ethnic groups, the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region has vanished. Formed in 1992 from five distinct regions, this southwestern Ethiopian powerhouse was defined by its immense cultural diversity and vast rural landscapes, but recent political shifts have fundamentally redrawn its borders.

Established on 21 June 1992 through the merger of five regions, the SNNPR served as a complex administrative hub for southwestern Ethiopia. Its capital, Hawassa, was once the heart of a territory that bordered Kenya and the disputed Ilemi Triangle. The region was notable for being Ethiopia's most rural state; according to 2007 census data, nearly 90% of its 17.9 million residents lived in rural areas.

The region's identity was deeply tied to its linguistic and ethnic diversity. It was home to more than 45 indigenous groups, with languages like Welayta, Sidama, and Hadiya representing significant portions of the population. While Amharic served as the working language, the landscape was defined by diverse agricultural traditions, including the production of 44.2% of Ethiopia's total coffee output and the cultivation of the indigenous enset crop.

The SNNPR's era came to an end through a series of successive fragmentations. The first major shift occurred in June 2020 when the Sidama Region emerged independently, leaving the capital, Hawassa, located outside the new region's boundaries. The final dissolution was solidified on 18 August 2023, when the creation of the South Ethiopia Regional State left the remainder of the territory to become the Central Ethiopia Regional State.

This fragmentation reflects a broader trend of administrative restructuring in Ethiopia. What was once a singular, massive entity containing millions of people and diverse livelihoods has been carved into several smaller, independent regional states.
