This tiny walled town in Slovakia has been a religious powerhouse for centuries
In short: Perched on a hill overlooking the imposing Spiš Castle, the ecclesiastical town of Spišská Kapitula remains a remarkably preserved relic of the Middle Ages. Enclosed by ancient walls, this single-street settlement has served as a vital center of church administration and episcopal power since the 12th century.
Spišská Kapitula, often referred to as the Spiš Chapter house, functions as a self-contained ecclesiastical enclave. Its architectural heart is St. Martin's Cathedral, a structure that blends Romanesque and Gothic styles. Built primarily between the 13th and 15th centuries, the cathedral serves as a repository for medieval art, including intricate carved altars and high-quality 15th-century marble tombstones belonging to the Zápolya family. The site is also home to a significant 1317 wall-painting depicting the coronation of Charles I as King of Hungary.
The town's historical significance evolved alongside the regional church hierarchy. It emerged as the primary seat of local church administration in the 12th century. By 1776, the town's status was elevated when Maria Theresa, the Queen of Hungary, partitioned the Diocese of Eger, establishing the Diocese of Spiš with its seat at the Kapitula. This administrative legacy persists, as the town remains the residence of the Bishop of Spiš today.
Beyond its administrative role, the town is a protected cultural landmark, recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that includes the nearby Spiš Castle and the town of Levoča. Its preservation is so complete that it offers a rare glimpse into medieval town planning, featuring a monastery and a single street protected by a fortified wall. The site has hosted notable figures, including Pope John Paul II, who visited in 1995, and it continues to serve as a final resting place for historical figures, such as Bishop Ján Vojtašák, whose remains were interred there in 2003.
