In short: Founded in 1962, Stena Line evolved from a local Swedish ferry operator into one of the world's largest maritime transport companies. By mastering computer-based logistics and aggressive fleet expansion, the firm now navigates complex international waters, constantly adapting its routes to meet shifting global demand and economic realities.

Stena Line began in 1962 when Sten A. Olsson acquired the Skagenlinjen route between Gothenburg, Sweden, and Frederikshavn, Denmark. Headquartered in Gothenburg, the company grew into a major unit of the Stena Sphere. Its expansion strategy relied heavily on acquisitions, including the 1981 purchase of its primary rival, Sessanlinjen, and the 1990 acquisition of Sealink British Ferries, which effectively doubled the company's size and solidified its presence across the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The company has consistently leveraged technology to maintain its competitive edge. In 1972, it became one of Europe’s first ferry operators to implement a computer-based reservation system, extending this to freight operations by 1978. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Stena Line experimented with high-speed vessels and massive super ferries, such as the 62,000-tonne ships launched in 2010. These investments were paired with complex fleet management, including major refits like the 36-metre lengthening of vessels to increase capacity and reduce emissions.

Adaptability remains central to the company's survival. Stena Line frequently adjusts its network based on profitability and demand, as seen in the 2020 closure of the Oslo–Frederikshavn route due to the pandemic and the 2025 withdrawal from the Rosslare–Cherbourg route. The company also continues to diversify its reach, such as its 2024 acquisition of a 49% stake in Africa Morocco Link, marking its expansion beyond European waters. Today, the firm operates a dynamic fleet, balancing new ship construction with the strategic sale of older vessels to maintain operational efficiency.
