The sandy soil of Stalag Luft III was designed to stop escapes
In short: Located near Sagan, this Luftwaffe-run camp was engineered to make tunneling nearly impossible. With sandy subsoil that lacked structural integrity and seismograph microphones patrolling the perimeter, the prisoners faced a formidable defense. Yet, they turned gymnastics and hollow furniture into ingenious tools for defiance.
Established in March 1942 in what was then Nazi Germany (now Żagań, Poland), Stalag Luft III was specifically designed to hold Western Allied air force personnel. The site was chosen for its sandy soil, which made it difficult to dig tunnels without the structures collapsing. To further deter escape, the barracks were raised 60 cm off the ground to help guards detect digging, and seismograph microphones were placed around the perimeter to monitor for vibrations.
Despite these defenses, the camp became famous for two major escape attempts. In October 1943, prisoners used a plywood gymnastic vaulting horse—disguised as a piece of sports equipment—to hide tools and soil while they dug a 30-meter tunnel. This successful breakout inspired the 1950 film 'The Wooden Horse'. The camp's most famous event, the 'Great Escape' of March 1944, was conceived by RAF Squadron Leader Roger Bushell and authorized by the senior British officer, Herbert Massey.
The camp was a complex society of its own, housing up to 10,949 inmates, including approximately 2,500 RAF officers and 7,500 USAAF officers. Prisoners established a radio station called Station KRGY, published newspapers like the 'Kriegie Times', and even held high-quality theatrical performances. While the Luftwaffe provided better treatment than other German camps, the prisoners remained under constant surveillance, using an elaborate signal system to track the movements of the roughly 800 guards.
