From Comanche raids to a 'UFO frenzy' in rural Texas
In short: Stephenville's history is a study in survival and reinvention. It survived a period of violent raids and civil war hardships to become a livestock hub, only to find itself at the center of a global media storm when mysterious lights appeared in its night sky.
Stephenville was established in 1854 by John M. Stephen, but the settlement faced immediate existential threats. For the first two years, the population grew to 776, but then plummeted as the townsite sat in Comanche territory. The combination of frequent raids and the logistical hardships of the American Civil War forced many residents to flee, stalling growth until 1871.
The town's economic identity shifted significantly in the late 19th century. The 1889 debut of the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railway helped turn the area into a hub for farming and ranching. A major industrial shift occurred in 1886 with the introduction of coal mining, which remained a pillar of the local economy for three decades.
In a modern twist, the city gained international notoriety in January 2008. Dozens of residents reported seeing patterns of lights in the sky, which they perceived as a single large unidentified flying object. While the military later attributed the event to F-16 jets from the 457th Fighter Squadron dropping countermeasure flares during training, the local reaction was immediate. The town experienced a 'UFO frenzy,' producing merchandise branding it as the 'Alien Capital of the World' and even securing $7,000 in scholarships for its high school.
Today, Stephenville serves as the county seat of Erath County and the principal city of its micropolitan area. It maintains a humid subtropical climate and a demographic profile where 99% of residents live in urban areas. Despite its small size of about 20,847 people, it remains a significant cultural hub, home to Tarleton State University and a legacy of notable figures in music, sports, and journalism.
