In short: Founded in 1967, the St. Louis Blues were born from a desire to create a regional rivalry and utilize an existing arena. Despite decades of postseason heartbreak and near-relocation, the franchise eventually secured its first Stanley Cup in 2019, cementing its place as a resilient pillar of professional sports.

The St. Louis Blues entered the National Hockey League as part of the 1967 expansion, a move driven by Chicago Black Hawks owners James D. Norris and Arthur Wirtz. Seeking to offload the aging St. Louis Arena, they convinced the league to grant a franchise to the city, hoping to cultivate a regional rivalry similar to baseball's Cubs and Cardinals. The team took its name from a famous composition by W. C. Handy. Despite early success, including three consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances from 1968 to 1970, the team struggled to secure a championship, falling to the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins.

The franchise faced significant instability in the 1970s and 1980s. Financial difficulties led to a 1977 sale to Ralston Purina, which later attempted to sell the team to a group planning to relocate the club to Saskatoon. This move was blocked by the NHL Board of Governors in 1983, leading to a legal battle and the league briefly taking control of the team. Stability eventually returned under new ownership, and the team moved into the modern Enterprise Center in 1994. Throughout these years, the Blues maintained a reputation for regular-season competitiveness, including a 25-year playoff streak that lasted from 1980 to 2004.

The 2019 Stanley Cup victory marked a historic turning point for the franchise, occurring 52 years after its inception. This win made the Blues the final active team from the 1967 expansion class to claim the trophy. Today, the team remains a central part of the St. Louis sporting landscape, having evolved from a secondary market experiment into a perennial contender with a dedicated local following.
