How an apartment bedroom in North Carolina birthed an electropop duo
In short: Before they were Grammy-nominated stars, Sylvan Esso was a collaborative experiment born in a bedroom. Formed in 2013, the duo transformed simple vocal requests into a signature sound that defies the mechanical regularity of typical electronic dance music.
The origins of Sylvan Esso trace back to a chance encounter in Milwaukee at the Cactus Club. While performing alongside her trio Mountain Man, Amelia Meath encountered producer Nick Sanborn—then a solo artist known as Made of Oak—and requested his distinct interpretation of her track, "Play It Right." This partnership ultimately blossomed into the duo that would shape much of contemporary electropop.
The band's early creative process was defined by necessity and proximity. After returning from a year-and-a-half tour with Feist, Meath moved to Durham, North Carolina, seeking an affordable place to live. This led her to Sanborn, and the duo began recording their debut album within the confines of Sanborn's apartment bedroom. This intimate setting helped shape a sound that The New York Times noted for its fragility and deliberate lack of mechanical regularity, standing in contrast to the repetitive nature of much electronic dance music.
Over time, the duo's chemistry matured, moving from separate roles to a unified expression. Sanborn noted that their later work, such as the 2020 album Free Love, felt less like two individuals and more like a single entity as the barriers between their musical roles dissolved. From their 2014 debut, which reached No. 39 on the Billboard 200, to their 2022 album No Rules Sandy, the duo has maintained a style that Meath describes as making sad songs that sound happy, often reflecting on the state of the world.
