Before Hollywood fame, Steve Buscemi spent years as a New York City firefighter.
In short: Long before he became a staple of independent cinema and mainstream comedy, Steve Buscemi lived a double life. While pursuing acting in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he served as a firefighter with the FDNY, eventually leaving the department in 1984 to dedicate himself fully to his craft.
Born in Brooklyn in 1957, Buscemi was encouraged by his father to pursue civil service work. Following high school, he took the civil service exam and eventually joined the Fire Department of the City of New York in 1980. For four years, he balanced the rigors of firefighting with his growing interest in performance, often appearing in small theatrical productions and developing a comedy act with Mark Boone Junior during his off-hours.
Buscemi’s transition to full-time acting began in earnest after he left the FDNY in 1984. His film career gained significant momentum through his collaboration with the Coen brothers, beginning with the 1990 film Miller’s Crossing. Known for his ability to play oddballs and criminals, he became a fixture in cult classics like Reservoir Dogs and The Big Lebowski. His characters often met unfortunate ends, a recurring theme that the actor noted he would check for whenever he received a new script.
Beyond his film work, Buscemi has maintained a prolific television career, including roles in The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. His connection to his past service remained strong; following the September 11 attacks, he temporarily rejoined his former fire company to assist at the World Trade Center site. Today, he is recognized as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and sought-after actors, capable of moving seamlessly between dark comedy, intense drama, and voice acting for major animated franchises.
