The stealthy Russian corvette that blurs the line between ship classes
In short: Large enough to be called a frigate by NATO, yet officially classified as a corvette, the Steregushchiy-class is a masterclass in naval engineering. It combines advanced radar-absorbent materials with heavy offensive capabilities, designed to project power across littoral zones and beyond.
Designed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau, the Steregushchiy-class (Project 20380) was built to replace the older Grisha class. While Russia designates them as corvettes, their significant displacement and dimensions lead NATO forces to classify them as frigates. This ambiguity highlights a sophisticated design intended for multipurpose roles: engaging enemy submarines and surface ships, providing gun support for landing operations, and conducting littoral zone maneuvers.
The vessels utilize a steel hull paired with a composite material superstructure featuring a bulbous bow and nine watertight subdivisions. To minimize their radar signature, designers applied fire-resistant radar-absorbent fiberglass and utilized 21 patents and 14 new computer programs during construction. Weaponry varies by subclass; while the domestic version features Paket-NK anti-submarine launchers, the export variant (Project 20382 Tigr) carries heavy torpedoes and specialized anti-ship missiles like the SS-N-26.
The Russian Navy intends to procure at least 30 of these ships across all four major fleets. Recent deployments have shown their reach, with vessels participating in exercises in the Mediterranean, Red Sea, North Sea, and East China Sea. Notably, these ships have been used in joint drills with the Chinese Navy and participated in long-distance deployments to visit ports in Algeria and Malaysia.
The class has seen continuous evolution through Project 20381, which introduced the Zaslon-Redut SAM system, and further developments into the Gremyashchiy (Project 20385) and Tigr subclasses. This iterative design process ensures that while the core hull remains a reliable platform, the sensor masts and missile capacities can be upgraded to meet shifting geopolitical demands.
