In short: In 1999, Santana achieved what many thought impossible. After nearly three decades without a chart-topping hit, the band released a collaborative powerhouse that didn't just revive their career—it shattered records held by Michael Jackson and redefined the boundaries of rock and pop.

Following a period of commercial struggle in the early 1990s, guitarist Carlos Santana sought a new direction. After being released from the Island label in 1996, Santana reconnected with Arista president Clive Davis. The goal was to create a radio-friendly sound that balanced 'vintage Santana' with contemporary influences, moving away from the band's 1960s roots without losing their essence.

The resulting album, Supernatural, released on June 15, 1999, became a global phenomenon. It featured an expansive roster of guest artists, including Rob Thomas, Eric Clapton, and Lauryn Hill. While critics like Stephen Thomas Erlewine argued the heavy use of guest stars prevented a consistent album voice, the commercial impact was undeniable. The single 'Smooth' spent 12 weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, and 'Maria Maria' held the top spot for 10 weeks.

The album's success was statistically unprecedented. It marked the band's first number-one album on the Billboard 200 since 1971, ending a 28-year gap. At the 2000 Grammy Awards, Supernatural won nine awards, including Album of the Year, breaking the record for most wins by a single album previously held by Michael Jackson's Thriller. Having moved roughly 30 million units globally, this record holds the record for the highest sales by any Latino musician.

The project's legacy was further cemented when it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025. Beyond the charts, the album's construction was a deliberate experiment in musical adaptation, using collaborations to bridge the gap between classic rock and the modern pop landscape.
