How Carlos Santana transformed Latin rock into a global multi-platinum phenomenon
In short: From a San Francisco blues band to a multi-platinum powerhouse, Santana's musical journey is defined by constant evolution. While their signature Latin influence remains, the band's trajectory has spanned esoteric explorations and massive pop successes, resulting in over 100 million records sold worldwide.
Formed in San Francisco in 1967 as the Carlos Santana Blues Band, the group initially featured a lineup including Carlos Santana on lead guitar, Gregg Rolie on Hammond organ and lead vocals, and Michael Carabello on percussion. Their ascent to mainstream recognition began in earnest two years later during their performance at the Woodstock festival. Following this breakthrough, the band released their self-titled debut album, Santana, which reached number four on the Billboard 200 and achieved two-times platinum status.
The 1970s marked a period of significant commercial success and stylistic shifts. The band's Abraxas reached number one on Billboard's charts in September 1970 and achieved five-times platinum status. Throughout that decade, the group released twelve additional albums, all of which received RIAA certifications. However, the band's musical direction became increasingly esoteric due to Carlos Santana's growing involvement with the guru Sri Chinmoy, even as they maintained their foundational Latin rock sound.
After a decade of relative quiet between 1984 and 1994, the band experienced a massive resurgence under Arista. Their album Supernatural became a global juggernaut, reaching number one in several countries and selling nearly 27 million copies worldwide, earning 15-times platinum status. As of 2010, the band's massive impact was quantified by over 100 million records sold, ten Grammy Awards, and three Latin Grammy Awards. Their discography continues to expand, with their most recent release being 2021's Blessings and Miracles.
