In short: Suwannee County, Florida, is defined by its rural landscape and the winding river that borders it. Beyond its timber history and rail connections, the county pioneered a unique model for public services in 1957, establishing Florida's first regional library system to expand access across county lines.

Created in 1858, Suwannee County sits in north-central Florida, anchored by its county seat, Live Oak. Historically, the region was defined by its rural character, supporting extensive lumber and turpentine camps that drew researchers like Zora Neale Hurston in the 1930s. The county's name is thought to derive from either the Spanish San Juan or the Creek word sawani, meaning echo river, reflecting the Suwannee River that wraps around much of its border.

The county's approach to public infrastructure is perhaps best exemplified by the Suwannee River Regional Library System. In 1957, the local library board sought grant funding that required a partnership with another county. By collaborating with the Mayo Woman's Club in neighboring Lafayette County, they formed the first regional library system in Florida. This initiative was an immediate success, securing $28,224 in initial funding and launching with a collection of 3,100 books. The system expanded rapidly, absorbing small libraries operated by local women's clubs across several surrounding counties by 1960.

Today, the county remains largely rural, with 84.7% of its 43,474 residents living outside urban areas as of the 2020 census. Its transportation history is equally significant; once a hub for major rail lines like the Seaboard Air Line, the county now serves as a crossroads for interstate travel via I-10 and I-75. While the landscape has evolved from its timber-camp roots, the county maintains its historical identity, from the preservation of its regional library headquarters in Live Oak to the remnants of abandoned rail lines now repurposed as greenway trails.
