In short: In the 1890s, Sutter County stood as a bastion of temperance in California. While the rest of the state was booming with saloons, this region enforced strict prohibition on the sale and consumption of alcohol in public spaces.

Sutter County's identity is deeply rooted in its agricultural heritage and early colonial history. Named for John Augustus Sutter, this area became a primary California county during statehood in 1850. Sutter, who hailed from Germany to Swiss parents, identified the vast farming capacity of the Sacramento Valley early on. He established Hock Farm in 1841 on the Feather River, which became the first major farm in the Central Valley, though it relied heavily on extensive slave labor from Native peoples.

The county's geography is defined by its relationship with water and land. Bordered by the Sacramento River to the west and the Feather River to the east, the region manages a complex network of 240 miles of levees. A critical piece of infrastructure, the Sutter Bypass, cuts through the heart of the county specifically to divert flood waters from the Sacramento River. Despite these water features, only about 1% of the county's 608 square miles is actually water; the remaining land is dominated by prime farmland and grazing areas, which cover roughly 88 percent of the territory.

Beyond its landscape, Sutter County has been a site of significant cultural and technological milestones. In 1858, John Joseph Montgomery was born here; he flew a heavier-than-air vehicle first, beating the Wright Brothers by 20 years. Today, the county remains a distinct political entity within California's 3rd congressional district, characterized by its rural-urban mix and its historical role as one of the state's two prohibition counties during the late 19th century.
