How a college dropout transformed basketball and manga history
In short: In 1988, a 20-year-old literature student abandoned his studies in Kumamoto to move to Tokyo. He would go on to create one of the best-selling manga series in history, sparking a national sporting phenomenon and redefining the emotional depth of graphic storytelling.
Takehiko Inoue’s ascent from a literature major at Kumamoto University to a global icon began with a single submission to Weekly Shōnen Jump. After serving as an assistant to Tsukasa Hojo on City Hunter, Inoue debuted in 198 and won the 35th annual Tezuka Award for Purple Kaede. His career reached unprecedented heights with Slam Dunk, a basketball saga published between 1990 and 1996 that has sold over 170 million copies worldwide.
The impact of his work extends far beyond the page. Slam Dunk triggered a surge of interest in basketball among Japanese youth, earning Inoue a commendation from the Japan Basketball Association. His versatility is equally striking; while Slam Dunk focused on high school athletics, his 1998 series Vagabond explored the life of the samurai Miyamoto Musashi, winning the 2000 Kodansha Manga Award. He even applied his talent for depicting internal human emotions to the video game Lost Odyssey, commissioned by Hironobu Sakaguchi.
Inoue's artistry has bridged the gap between pop culture and fine art. In 2011, he painted large-scale Buddhist imagery for the East Hongan Temple in Kyoto, and in 2013, he published a travel memoir regarding the architecture of Antoni Gaudí in Catalonia. His recent cinematic work, The First Slam Dunk (2022), became Japan's top-grossing domestic film of 2023, earning approximately $281.1 million globally and earning him accolades as both director and screenwriter.
