How Tania Cagnotto became the most decorated female diver in Italian history
In short: Born into a family of Olympic divers in Bolzano, Tania Cagnotto redefined Italian diving. Over a career spanning five Olympic Games, she became the first Italian woman to secure a World Championship gold medal. Her journey from a teenage prodigy to a veteran medalist reveals the immense discipline behind elite performance.
Tania Cagnotto, born on 15 May 1985, was raised in an environment defined by aquatic excellence. Her parents, Giorgio Cagnotto and Carmen Casteiner, were both Olympic divers, with her father securing four Olympic medals between the 1970s and 1980s. This familial legacy provided a foundation for her own career, which she pursued under the sponsorship of the Italian police force's sports section, GN Fiamme Gialle.
Cagnotto’s rise to prominence began in earnest at the 2004 European Championships in Madrid, where she claimed gold in the 10-meter platform at age 19. Her trajectory was marked by consistent performance on the world stage, including bronze medals in the 3-meter springboard at the 2005 Montreal and 2009 Rome World Championships. A pivotal moment occurred at the 2015 FINA World Championship in Kazan, where she secured gold in the 1-meter springboard, becoming the first Italian female diver to achieve a World Championship title.
The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro served as the final chapter of her competitive career. After narrowly missing the podium in London, she concluded her Olympic journey with a silver medal in the 3-meter synchronized event alongside Francesca Dallapè and a bronze in the individual 3-meter springboard. Following her official retirement after a final competition in Torino in May 2017, she transitioned into coaching. Today, she resides in Bolzano with her husband, Stefano Parolin, and their two daughters, Maya and Lisa.
