In short: Once a vital hub for the Newfoundland cod industry, Teignmouth has weathered centuries of change. It has survived devastating French invasions, the rise and fall of shipbuilding, and the silting of its harbour, eventually transforming from a rugged maritime outpost into a popular destination for holidaymakers.

The history of Teignmouth is marked by significant maritime shifts and external threats. In the 14th century, it was a major port, second only to Dartmouth in Devon. However, its importance declined during the 15th century, potentially due to the silting of the harbour caused by tin mining on Dartmoor. The town also faced violent disruptions, such as the 1690 French invasion following the Battle of Beachy Head, which destroyed 116 dwelling houses and ten ships in just twelve hours.

The town's economy has historically relied on diverse maritime industries. In the 17th and 18th centuries, privateering was common, with ships like the Bellona—carrying 16 guns and 4 cohorns—sailing from its waters. The Newfoundland fisheries provided primary employment into the early 19th century, often involving local women who rowed ferries and fished while men were away at sea. By 1803, the town had transitioned into a 'fashionable watering place,' a trend bolstered by the arrival of the South Devon Railway in 1846.

Infrastructure has played a crucial role in the town's evolution. The first bridge across the estuary to Shaldon, opened in 1827, was the longest wooden bridge in England at the time. While the shipbuilding industry, which flourished in the 17th century, declined in the early 20th century, it saw a brief stimulus in 1921 when Morgan Giles acquired a derelict yard. Today, Teignmouth remains an active port, handling timber, grain, and clay.
