In short: The largest island in the British Virgin Islands sits 60 miles east of Puerto Rico. While its name likely derives from the Spanish word for turtle dove, some historians suggest Christopher Columbus may have actually intended to name it after Saint Anne.

Tortola is the primary hub of the British Virgin Islands, a territory composed of four larger islands and 32 smaller islets. As a geologic extension of the fault-block mountains of Puerto Rico, the landscape is defined by steep hills and lagoons. The island's highest elevation is Mount Sage, which reaches 1,709 feet (521 metres).

The island's history is deeply intertwined with the sugar industry and the transatlantic slave trade. During the late 18th century, Loyalists from the Thirteen Colonies settled the area following the American Revolutionary War. This era relied heavily on African slave labor, and the descendants of those enslaved people now constitute the vast majority of the island's population.

Today, the economy has shifted from the agriculture that dominated until the 1970s toward tourism and offshore financial services. While tourism provides roughly half of the islands' income, the financial sector is also vital; by the start of the 21st century, approximately 400,000 foreign businesses had registered in the territory. Despite its economic growth, the islands face persistent challenges, including water scarcity and the threat of hurricanes, such as the devastating Hurricane Irma that struck in September 2017.

The social fabric of Tortola is unique, with English serving as the official language, though Virgin Islands Creole English is used more frequently in daily life. The population is concentrated heavily on Tortola, which holds about four-fifths of the total British Virgin Islands population.
