In short: Incorporated in 1957, the village of Tequesta is a planned community in Palm Beach County that honors the indigenous people who originally inhabited the region. With over 20% of its total area consisting of water, this unique municipality serves as the northernmost point of the sprawling Miami metropolitan area.

Tequesta was established in the 1950s, designed primarily around the Tequesta Country Club. While the majority of the village sits on the Florida mainland, its geography is complex; portions of the municipality extend onto Jupiter Island in Martin County, surrounding the county-owned Coral Cove Park. This coastal positioning necessitates significant infrastructure, as transit to and from the village from the south or east requires crossing bridges.

The village's relationship with its waterways is currently undergoing a major physical transformation. Beginning in March 2023, the Jupiter Federal Bridge entered a multi-year closure for a comprehensive reconstruction project. Scheduled to last approximately 20 months, the project aims to modernize the crossing by adding dedicated bicycle lanes and sidewalks, while increasing the bridge's vertical clearance to 42 feet. Furthermore, the navigable-channel width will be expanded to 125 feet, reflecting the area's ongoing commitment to balancing modern infrastructure needs with its maritime environment.

Demographically, the village has seen steady growth, with a population of 6,158 recorded in the 2020 census, up from 5,273 in 2000. The community maintains a distinct profile, with a median age of 51.4 years as of 2020. Despite its relatively small size of 2.2 square miles, Tequesta functions as a fully urbanized municipality, with 100% of its residents living in urban areas. It remains a notable enclave within the broader Miami metropolitan region, balancing its historical namesake roots with the practical demands of modern Florida coastal living.
