The Boys: How a cancelled comic book series became a global media franchise
In short: Created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys began as a gritty, anti-superhero comic in 2006. After being dropped by DC Comics imprint WildStorm for its cynical tone, the series found a new home at Dynamite Entertainment, eventually evolving into a sprawling multimedia universe of live-action, animation, and audiobooks.
The Boys follows a clandestine CIA squad tasked with monitoring a superhero community corrupted by celebrity status and reckless behavior. Led by Billy Butcher, the team includes Mother's Milk, the Frenchman, the Female, and newcomer Wee Hughie Campbell. Their primary antagonists are The Seven, a prestigious, Vought-American-sanctioned group of superheroes who represent the very corruption the squad aims to expose. The original comic run, set in an alternate history between 2006 and 2008, spanned 72 issues and concluded in 2012.
The series' journey was far from linear. Initially published by WildStorm, it was abruptly cancelled after just six issues in January 2007 because DC Comics executives were uncomfortable with its anti-superhero themes. Ennis later noted that this cancellation was a blessing, as it allowed the series to move to Dynamite Entertainment, where he enjoyed significantly more creative freedom. The series eventually expanded through various spin-offs, including Herogasm, Highland Laddie, and Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker, as well as an epilogue series titled Dear Becky, which was published in 2020.
Beyond the printed page, the franchise has seen numerous adaptations. A television series produced by Amazon Studios premiered in 2019 and is set to conclude with its fifth season. The universe has further expanded into the animated anthology series Diabolical, the live-action spin-off Gen V, and a series of immersive audiobooks produced by GraphicAudio. Despite early struggles to secure a film adaptation—with projects at Columbia Pictures and Paramount Pictures failing to materialize—the property has cemented itself as a cultural force, exploring the dark intersection of unchecked power and corporate influence.
