The stadium built to lure an NFL team that eventually left
In short: In 1992, St. Louis began constructing a massive domed stadium to secure a professional football franchise. While the plan successfully brought the Rams to Missouri in 1995, a complex web of lease requirements, billion-dollar renovation disputes, and a high-stakes arbitration battle ultimately paved the way for the team's departure.
The Dome at America's Center was born from a necessity to re-enter the NFL after the Cardinals departed for Phoenix in 1988. Construction began in 1or 1992, funded by public bonds starting in 1989. The venue was designed with a specific aesthetic: its exterior, clad in brick, limestone, and tinted concrete, was intended to mimic the look of pre-World War II libraries and school buildings rather than a traditional stadium.
The stadium's primary tenant, the St. Louis Rams, arrived in 1995. However, the lease contained a critical 'top quartile' clause. To prevent the team from leaving, the stadium had to remain ranked among the top 25% of all NFL facilities, with performance checked at ten-year intervals. By 2005, the facility no longer met this standard, triggering a decade of intense negotiations and financial deadlock.
The dispute escalated into a massive gap in valuation. In 2012, the Convention and Visitor Center proposed $124 million in renovations, while the Rams countered with a $700 million proposal to rebuild much of the structure, including a sliding roof. In 2013, arbitrators ruled that only the $700 million plan could satisfy the 'first tier' requirement. This impasse, combined with the Rams' purchase of land in Inglewood, California, led to the team's relocation to Los Angeles, approved by the NFL in January 2016.
Today, the venue serves as a multi-purpose space for the St. Louis Battlehawks of the UFL and major conventions. While it can seat up to 82,624 people, the facility has faced criticism for its atmosphere, with some critics describing it as a cavernous 'urban eyescroe' that felt empty even during the team's most successful eras.
