The quarterback who survived two 'very, very severe' concussions
In short: Trent Green’s NFL journey was defined by a resilience that bordered on the extraordinary. After years of being a backup and enduring career-threatening head injuries, he managed to lead teams to playoff appearances and set records—all while navigating the physical toll of some of the league's most violent hits.
Trent Green’s path to stardom was anything but linear. After entering the 1993 NFL draft via the eighth round for San Diego Chargers, he served as a reserve and faced release from the CFL's British Columbia Lions prior to joining Washington Redskins. It wasn't until 1998 that he became a starter, eventually leading to a high-profile move to the St. Louis Rams in 1999. However, a preseason hit by Rodney Harrison resulted in a season-ending knee injury, allowing Kurt Warner to take over and lead the team to Super Bowl XXXIV.
Green found his greatest success with the Kansas City Chiefs starting in 2001. While playing for Kansas City, he secured two Pro Bowl spots alongside two playoff runs and one division crown. On 22 December 2002, he matched the NFL's longest career pass play mark of 99 yards. Despite these successes, his career was repeatedly interrupted by severe head trauma.
In September 2006, Green suffered a 'very, very severe' concussion against the Cincinnati Bengals after being struck while attempting to slide. He was rendered unconscious and out indefinitely. A second devastating blow occurred in October 2007 with the Miami Dolphins; while attempting a block against Houston Texans tackle Travis Johnson, Green fell face-down and was knocked out cold again. These injuries led to intense public debate over his safety, eventually resulting in his retirement from professional football on June 12, 2009.
