In short: Imagine experiencing the climactic battles of Middle-earth not as a spectator, but as a participant. This 2003 title allows you to lead the charge at the gates of Minas Tirith, wielding the powers of wizards and kings to turn the tide of a cinematic war.

Developed by EA Redwood Shores, this hack and slash title was designed as a companion to Peter Jackson's film trilogy rather than a direct adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's 1954 novel. This distinction was a matter of legal necessity; while Vivendi Universal held the rights to the literary works, Electronic Arts held the rights to the New Line Cinema films. Consequently, the game focuses on the cinematic experience, using actual reference photos, models, and props from the movies to ensure visual fidelity.

The gameplay structure is divided into three distinct narrative arcs. Players can navigate the 'Path of the Wizard' as Gandalf, the 'Path of the King' with Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, or the 'Path of the Hobbits' with Frodo and Sam. While the previous game in the series was more linear, this sequel features environments twice the size of its predecessor, allowing for interactive machinery like catapults and the use of environmental objects as weapons. It also introduced a co-op mode, letting two players experience the siege of the Hornburg or the defense of Minas Tirith together.

Mechanically, the game functions as a modern version of Gauntlet, emphasizing a 'skill' meter. Players are graded on 'Fair' to 'Perfect' performance; achieving a 'Perfect' status doubles experience points and buffs attack strength. Beyond individual character upgrades, the game features 'Fellowship' upgrades that benefit the entire party. The narrative culminates in a final stand at the Black Gate of Mordor, where players must hold off a massive army to provide a distraction for the destruction of the Ring at Mount Doom.
