The world's largest ice cream manufacturer is now a standalone giant
In short: In late 2025, the ice cream division of Unilever underwent a massive structural divorce. By spinning off into the Magnum Ice Cream Company, the industry titan became an independent public entity, carving out a specialized business model to manage the unique complexities of the frozen goods supply chain.
The transition began in March 2024 when Unilever announced plans to demerge its ice cream unit. This move was driven by the distinct operational requirements of frozen goods, which differ significantly from Unilever's core categories like personal care and home care. Key challenges include a specialized frozen supply chain, unique point-of-sale needs, greater capital intensity, and high seasonality.
The Magnum Ice Cream Company officially became an independent subsidiary on July 1, 2025, before launching as a publicly traded company on December 8, 2025. The firm launched with a starting valuation of $9.1 billion, appearing on the New York Stock Exchange, London Stock Exchange, and Euronext Amsterdam. It currently holds an estimated 21% of the global ice cream market share.
The company's identity is tied to the 'Heartbrand' logo, launched in 1998 by Carter Wong Design to centralize manufacturing and marketing. While the brand is global, it operates under different regional names, such as Wall's in the UK and Algida in Italy. However, the demerger sparked controversy; Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield protested the move, fearing the loss of independence for Ben & Jerry's social values, though CEO Peter ter Kulve confirmed the brand remains fully integrated into the new company.
The company's scale is evidenced by its historical infrastructure. During Unilever's tenure, the division operated eleven factories across Europe, with major hubs in Germany, Italy, France, and the United Kingdom. While the company expanded across 40 countries by 2019, it has also strategically divested certain regional interests, such as those in Russia, Chile, and Venezuela, to focus on its primary global operations.
