Five millennia of conquest and rebirth in one small square kilometre
In short: From a tiny Canaanite village by a single spring to a global spiritual epicenter, Jerusalem has been destroyed and rebuilt dozens of times. Discover how layers of ancient empires, holy wars, and shifting faiths transformed this ancient settlement into the most contested city on Earth.
The story of Jerusalem began roughly 5,000 years ago as a modest settlement situated near the Gihon spring. Its early history is defined by the rise of ancient kingdoms, including the era of King David and Solomon, who oversaw the construction of the First Temple. However, this period of stability was shattered by the Babylonian conquest, which led to the destruction of the Temple and the subsequent period of Exile.
The city's identity has been continuously reshaped by successive imperial powers. Following the return from exile under Cyrus the Great and the establishment of the Second Temple, the city moved through Greek influence under Alexander the Great and the Maccabean revolt. The Roman era brought the monumental Temple of Herod, only for that structure to be destroyed in 70 CE. This era also saw the emergence of Christianity and the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
As Islamic influence expanded, the landscape changed with the Muslim conquest and the creation of the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque. The medieval period was marked by intense conflict, including the First Crusade, the rise of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, and the legendary battles of Saladin and Richard the Lionheart. Later, the city saw the influence of the Mamluks, the Ottomans—notably the walls of Suleiman—and the British Mandate.
In the modern era, the city's history has been shaped by the 1947 UN plan, a period of division, and the Six-Day War. Today, within a single square kilometre, the city remains a profound intersection of three faiths, hosting millions of visitors annually.
