The English club that dominates the Welsh football league
In short: Imagine a football club based entirely in England that competes in the Welsh league system. The New Saints F.C. is this geographical anomaly, a powerhouse that has secured 18 league titles and recently made history as the first Welsh league side to reach a European group stage.
The New Saints F.C. (TNS) operates in a unique regulatory space. Based in Oswestry, Shropshire, the club competes in the Cymru Premier, the top flight of the Welsh football system. This cross-border arrangement was solidified in 2003 when the club merged with Oswestry Town. While the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and UEFA initially had objections to a merger between clubs under different governing bodies, the move was eventually ratified, allowing TNS to become a dominant force in Welsh football. The club's trajectory is marked by rapid professionalization. In 2003, it became the only club in the Welsh league system with a full-time playing staff. Following this capital injection, the team enjoyed remarkable prosperity; they secured either first or second place in nearly every year starting from 2001–02, excluding 2008–09.
A continental peak occurred during 2024–25, marking the initial time a Welsh league club entered the group or league phase of a primary UEFA tournament. Beyond the pitch, the club's identity is tied to its community and history. The name 'The New Saints' was chosen in 2006 to honor the heritage of both merged clubs: Llansantffraid was known as 'The Saints,' while Oswestry had ties to Saint Oswald. The club also manages a significant social impact through the TNSFC Foundation, established in 2013. This foundation provides physical activity and free meals for thousands of local children and older community members, aiming to boost health and social inclusion in the Shropshire area.
