In short: The 2026–27 Cymru Premier season marks a significant turning point for Wales' top flight. With a larger field of competitors and the introduction of video technology, the league is undergoing a structural and technological transformation designed to elevate its national profile.

The 2026–27 season, known for sponsorship reasons as the Novira Cymru Premier, represents the 35th season of the league since its 1992 inception. This particular campaign is historic as the first to implement the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, following a strategic plan by the Football Association of Wales to increase the league's visibility.

The league's composition has expanded to 16 teams, the largest number in its history. This expansion was achieved through a combination of the top 10 teams from the previous season and six promoted sides from the Cymru North and Cymru South. The roster includes several returning faces, such as Holywell Town, who returned to the top flight after a 27-year absence, and Llandudno, returning after seven years. Conversely, the season saw the debut of Trefelin BGC, Cambrian United, and Ammanford. The New Saints entered this campaign as the reigning champions, having secured the title for five consecutive years. The league's expansion also saw the departure of Bala Town and Llanelli Town, who were relegated following seventeen and one year in the top flight, respectively.

The competitive structure is divided into distinct phases following a 30-game regular season. The top six teams enter the Championship Race, competing for Champions League qualification, while the bottom six enter the Survival Zone. The league's movement is also defined by high-stakes play-offs, where the 14th-placed team must defend its position against challengers from the lower divisions to avoid relegation. Beyond the Championship Race, teams finishing between 7th and 10th qualify for the European Challenger. Additionally, the 7th-placed team earns a spot in the Conference League play-off.
