In short: The Naked Gun franchise is a masterclass in creative pivot. Born from the ashes of a short-lived television series, it transformed failed broadcast comedy into a staple of cinematic slapstick, proving that some of the best cultural exports are actually

The franchise originated with the 1982 ABC television series Police Squad!, created by the filmmaking trio David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker. Despite its creative pedigree—featuring sight gags, wordplay, and non sequiturs—the show was canceled after only six episodes. However, its legacy was secured when it served as the foundation for a successful series of theatrical films known as The Naked Gun.

The first film, released in 1988, featured Leslie Nielsen as Detective Lieutenant Frank Drebin. The narrative structure followed a common ZAZ (Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker) trope: culling plots from serious cinema to heighten the absurdity of the spoof. For instance, the first installment's plot was largely derived from the film Telefon, involving an assassination plot against Queen Elizabeth II.

The series expanded through several sequels, including The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991) and Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994). These films maintained the slapstick DNA while incorporating high-profile cameos and celebrity roles. Even after Leslie Nielsen's death in 2010, the franchise persisted through a point-and-click adventure game in 2012 and a new cinematic chapter featuring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., which premiered in August 2025.

The longevity of the brand is evidenced by its continued production cycle. Following the 2025 release, producer Erica Huggins confirmed that discussions for another sequel were already underway between the actors and writers. This enduring appeal highlights how a niche parody of police procedurals evolved into a durable piece of American comedy history.
