The Syr Darya: A 3,000-kilometer lifeline for a dying sea
In short: One of the planet's most significant ecological catastrophes occurred at the Aral Sea. However, the northern section is seeing a return of moisture. The Syr Darya river is the last remaining lifeline for this receding body of water, navigating a complex path through deserts and contested borders.
Measuring roughly 1,876 miles (3,019 km) when the Naryn river is counted, the Syr Darya represents Central Asia's longest waterway. Beginning where the Qoradaryo and Naryn rivers meet in the eastern Fergana Valley, it travels northwest across Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Its journey is defined by extreme geography, meandering through the eastern outskirts of the Kyzylkum Desert where it frequently loses its bed to the shifting sands.
The river's survival is a delicate balance of natural cycles and human engineering. Fed primarily by snow and glaciers in its upper mountainous basin, the river experiences high water from March or April to September. However, its flow is heavily regulated by major infrastructure, including the Toktogul hydroelectric station on the Naryn River, which was constructed in the 1970s and expanded in the 1980s. Other significant stations include Farhod, Qayroqqum, and Shardara.
The tragedy of the Aral Sea is deeply tied to the river's utility. Cotton and rice production relies on the Syr Darya and its branches to irrigate up to 5,000,000 acres (2,000,000 hectares) of territory. This massive diversion of water caused the Aral Sea to shrink dramatically in the late 20th century. By the 1990s, the flow in the lower reaches was significantly reduced, leading to a drying delta that exposed toxic salt and fertilizer residues to the wind, creating a severe health crisis for local populations.
