Engineering the impossible: the world's largest artificial rivers
In short: From the Sahara to the deserts of Pakistan, humanity is constructing massive artificial rivers to defy geography. These mega-projects move millions of gallons of water across borders and through deep underground networks to sustain cities and agriculture in some of the most arid environments on Earth.
The Great Man-Made River (GMR) in Libya serves as a primary example of this engineering ambition. Often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World," it is a vast network of underground pipelines and aqueducts designed to transport high-quality fresh water from the Sahara to the Libyan coast. The project was initiated to provide domestic, agricultural, and industrial water to populous northern cities that previously had to rely on declining rain-fed aquifers or expensive desalination plants.
Pre-dating the final glacial period, the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System serves as a giant 'fossil water' storehouse for this supply. This water is estimated to be between 10,000 and 1,000,000 years old. To extract it, wells are drilled to depths of about 500 meters (1,650 feet) in Libya’s southeastern desert. Once pumped, the water travels through double pipelines made of steel-reinforced prestressed concrete, with individual sections measuring 4 meters (13 feet) in diameter and 7 meters (23 feet) in length.
While the GMR is a cornerstone of this movement, other massive projects are currently under construction or in operation globally. These include the Kachi Canal in Pakistan, the Kosh Tepa Canal in Afghanistan, and China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Additionally, Saudi Arabia is developing its own artificial river, and Egypt is working on the New Delta Project. These projects represent a high-stakes gamble on engineering to secure water for growing populations in water-stressed regions.
