The North Carolina river where industrial legacy meets environmental crisis
In short: Spanning over 191 miles, the Cape Fear River is North Carolina's largest river basin. While it serves as a vital commercial corridor and a scenic landscape, it has become a focal point for chemical contamination, with some fish species showing some of the highest PFAS levels ever documented in North America.
The Cape Fear River forms at the confluence of the Haw and Deep Rivers near Moncure, North Carolina. While the river provides essential navigation via a series of locks and dams—allowing vessels to travel from the Atlantic to Fayetteville—it is also the most industrialized river in the state. Its basin, covering 9,149 square miles, is lined with manufacturing plants, power plants, and industrial agriculture, which contribute to a complex profile of pollution.
A significant environmental concern involves per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often called 'forever chemicals' because they do not easily break down. One specific replacement chemical, GenX, is produced at the Chemours plant in Fayetteville and has been detected in the river's wastewater. In 2020, researchers found 'staggering' concentrations of these chemicals in the Deep River, a major tributary, including a sample containing PFOS at 1 part per billion—over 14 times the U.S. EPA health advisory for drinking water.
The impact on local wildlife is profound. A 2018 study revealed that striped bass from the river contained 40 times more PFAS in their blood than bass raised in aquaculture facilities. In 2020, these fish were found to have the highest rates of PFAS documented in any North American fish. Because of PFOS pollution, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services released a warning in July 2023 regarding eating specific freshwater fish found within the river's lower and middle reaches.
