In short: Before he was the 26th U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt was a son shaped by a father of immense contradictions. A businessman, a Union supporter with Confederate ties, and a relentless reformer, Theodore Roosevelt Sr. built a legacy of charity that defined the character of a future world leader.

Theodore Roosevelt Sr. (1831–1878) was a figure of significant social influence in New York. A businessman involved in the plate-glass import trade through Roosevelt & Son, he was equally known for his extensive philanthropic endeavors. He helped establish the New York City Children's Aid Society and the New York Children's Orthopedic Hospital, the latter of which was funded after a clever social maneuver involving the display of medical braces to New York's elite.

His life was marked by complex loyalties. During the American Civil War, while a Charter Member of the Union League Club, his wife's family held strong Confederate ties, with her brothers fighting for the Southern cause. Despite this, Roosevelt actively supported the Union, even working with Abraham Lincoln to implement an 'Allotment System'—a payroll deduction program designed to help soldiers support their families back home.

The elder Roosevelt's death at age 46 was precipitated by a gastrointestinal tumor, following a period of intense political frustration. In late 1877, President Rutherford Hayes nominated him as Collector of the Port of New York, a move intended to undermine the corrupt Senator Roscoe Conkling. The Senate's rejection of the appointment, via a 25 to 31 vote, left Roosevelt disillusioned. His son, the future President, would later credit his father's disciplined, 'clean living' standards as the foundation of his own character, often consulting his father's perceived values before making vital national decisions.
