In short: In the high-stakes world of rallying, Thierry Neuville is defined by his persistence. After years of finishing as runner-up and navigating grueling terrain, he finally secured Belgium's first drivers' world title in 2024. His journey from an asphalt specialist to a snow-winning champion is a masterclass in endurance.

Thierry Neuville’s path to the top of the World Rally Championship (WRC) was marked by extreme volatility. Born in St. Vith, he began his competitive career in 2007, initially establishing himself as an asphalt specialist. However, his rise was frequently punctuated by mechanical failures and crashes. During a 2010 Junior World Rally Championship campaign, for instance, Neuville led many events but finished seventh overall due to numerous retirements—including a mechanical fault in Turkey and a crash in Portugal.

His breakthrough with Hyundai Motorsport began in 2014, where he secured the manufacturer's first win at Rallye Deutschland. This partnership proved prolific; Neuville helped Hyundai secure manufacturers' titles in both 2019 and 2020. Despite his success, the drivers' crown eluded him for years. Between 2016 and 2019, he finished as a runner-up five times, often battling closely with rivals like Sébastien Ogier and Ott Tänak. One of his most dramatic near-misses occurred at Rally Australia in 2013, where a puncture by Mikko Hirvonen allowed Neuville to snatch second place just before the PowerStage.

Neuville eventually diversified his skillset, becoming one of the few non-Nordic drivers to win on snow at the 2018 Rally Sweden. His career is defined by these technical pivots—from asphalt to gravel to snow—and a remarkable ability to recover from disaster. This resilience culminated in 2024 when he finally achieved his maiden drivers' world title, cementing his legacy as Belgium's first champion in the sport.
